Công nghệ nhân bản vô tính động vật được hoàn thiện chính là để thực hiện chức năng này.
Cuộc tranh luận rộng lớn và sâu sắc
Trong lịch sử khoa học, hiếm khi có một cuộc tranh luận kéo dài với qui mô toàn cầu, lớn và sâu sắc đến như vậy, về sự phát triển của bản thân một khoa học và những hưởng xã hội rộng khắp của nó như những vấn đề của công nghệ sinh học đương đại. Tất cả các phương tiện thông tin đại chúng, các nhà khoa học, các nhà xã hội học, các doanh nghiệp, người tiêu dùng và đặc biệt là người sản xuất nông nghiệp và các công ty dược phẩm đều bị cuốn hút. Cũng chưa bao giờ công luận xã hội lại có ảnh hưởng rõ rệt và cụ thể như thế đến tốc độ nghiên cứu và triển khai của một khoa học đang trong thời kỳ bùng nổ thông tin. Tốc độ nghiên cứu đã chậm hẳn lại ở một số nước và khu vực do chính phủ buộc phải cắt giảm kinh phí vì lo ngại dư luận xã hội phản đối . Tiến độ triển khai công nghệ mới cũng bị chững lại do các Công ty đề phòng bị thất thu không bán được sản phẩm công nghệ cao cho người tiêu dùng, thể hiện ở diện tích trồng trọt cây trồng chuyển gen đã bắt đầu giảm từ năm 2000.
Các quan điểm trái ngược nhau xoay quanh các vấn đề: Sự biến đổi di truyền các cây trồng có gây tai hại cho bản thân chúng về lâu dài? Thực phẩm sản xuất từ cây biến đổi gen có an toàn không, hậu quả sẽ như thế nào đối với con người nếu sử dụng lâu dài? Cây trồng chuyển gen có làm giảm tính đa dạng sinh học, có tiêu diệt các côn trùng có lợi, có làm tăng cỏ dại? Có lường hết được các hậu quả của việc đưa cây trồng chuyển gen vào môi trường? Vấn đề ô nhiễm di truyền thì sao? Những gen đã chuyển vào cây trồng, có thể chuyển sang người hay các động vật không? Về mặt đạo đức, việc chủ động biến đổi các sinh vật sống quanh ta là đúng hay sai?
Vấn đề đã đạt đến đỉnh điểm khi Tổ chức “Hoà bình xanh” yêu cầu ngừng ngay các nghiên cứu thao tác gen cho đến khi chứng minh được chắc chắn là nó hoàn toàn vô hại.
Liên hiệp quốc cũng đã phải ra tay chính thức từ năm 1995 bằng cách chi kinh phí cho một loạt các cuộc hội nghị chuyên đề về sử dụng và chuyển giao an toàn các sinh vật chuyển gen và các sản phẩm từ chúng, và đã đạt được kết quả cụ thể vào đầu năm 2000 với việc soạn thảo, nhất trí và đã được 133 nước thông qua một văn bản chính thức gọi là Nghị định thư Cartagena về an toàn sinh học áp dụng cho toàn cầu.
Tất cả chỉ có hai “thủ phạm”
Xét cho cùng, nguyên do của các sự kiện trên, về mặt khoa học, bắt nguồn từ 2 công nghệ : công nghệ thao tác gen, còn gọi là kỹ thuật di truyền và công nghệ nhân bản vô tính động vật.
Công nghệ thao tác gen xuất hiện từ năm 1970 khi lần đầu tiên các nhà khoa học tìm ra enzym cắt phân tử AND tại các điểm đặc thù, và cũng từ đó, người ta bắt đầu nói đến một cuộc cách mạng công nghệ sinh học mà ngày nay đang diễn ra trên qui mô toàn cầu. Thành tựu khoa học lớn và nổi bật gần đây nhất (được công bố tháng 2 năm 2001) đang thúc đẩy nhanh chóng tốc độ phát triển của lĩnh vực này trên đối tượng con người là việc kết thúc thành công Dự án giải trình tự hệ gen người. Công nghệ này chính là “thủ phạm” số 1 gây nên cuộc bút chiến toàn cầu với mức độ ngày càng khốc liệt như đã đề cập ở trên. Công nghệ nhân bản vô tính động vật xuất hiện với cừu Dolly nổi tiếng từ tháng 2 năm 1997. Tiếp đó, những phòng thí nghiệm khác nhau trên thế giới đã lần lượt nhân bản vô tính được bò, dê, lợn và chuột. Gần đây nhất, nhân dịp Noel 2002, chính Viện Roslin, nơi ra đời của Dolly, đã cho ra đời 5 con lợn nhân bản vô tính nhưng đã chuyển gen. Công nghệ này chính là “thủ phạm” số 2 của cuộc bút chiến nói trên.
Sức mạnh cộng hưởng của hai “kẻ vô tội”
Bản thân hai công nghệ trên hoàn toàn không có “tội lỗi” gì trong cuộc tranh luận toàn cầu kéo dài qua hai thế kỷ này. Ngược lại, chúng có công lớn, chúng là những công cụ hết sức hữu hiệu, sự kết tinh của nhiều thành tựu khoa học xuất sắc mà loài người đã tích tụ được trong suốt thế kỷ XX.
Nếu như công nghệ thao tác gen có chức năng chủ yếu là tạo ra các sinh vật mới thì nhược điểm của nó lại là rất khó khăn trong việc nhân bản hàng loạt một sinh vật đã được tạo ra với những đặc điểm kinh tế quí giá và duy trì chúng qua nhiều thế hệ, đặc biệt đối với các sinh vật sinh sản hữu tính, mà tất cả vật nuôi và nhiều cây trồng đều sinh sản hữu tính. Công nghệ nhân bản vô tính động vật được hoàn thiện chính là để thực hiện chức năng này. Vì vậy, ngành chăn nuôi đang đứng trước triển vọng được hưởng thụ những đàn gia súc lớn siêu chủng được tạo ra bằng công nghệ thao tác gen và được nhân bản hàng loạt bằng công nghệ nhân bản vô tính. Hiệu quả cộng hưởng của hai công nghệ này sẽ đưa lại những lợi ích hết sức to lớn cho loài người. Một thí dụ là thành công của các nhà khoa học thuộc Viện Hoàng gia Roslin vừa công bố trong dịp Noel 2002 trong việc tạo ra 5 con lợn nhân bản vô tính đã khử được yếu tố kháng miễn dịch bằng công nghệ thao tác gen, mở ra khả năng sử dụng phủ tạng của chúng để thay thế cho các bệnh nhân mắc bệnh cần thay thế.
Mười nghìn năm và hai mươi năm
Tiến sĩ Norman Borlaug, khi nhận Giải thưởng Nobel năm 1970, đã nhận xét “loài người phí mất 10 nghìn năm chọn tạo giống mới có được một nền sản xuất nông nghiệp ổn định cho 5 tỷ tấn lương thực mỗi năm”. Các giống cây trồng và vật nuôi lúc đó là kết quả của một quá trình thuần hoá lâu dài và chọn tạo giống kinh điển. Chúng được tạo ra bằng hai phương pháp chủ yếu : 1) Lai có định hướng (lai theo sơ đồ), và 2) Sử dụng các tác nhân đột biến vật lý và hoá học. Các giống chủng này mặc nhiên được coi là vô hại, mặc dù cả hai phương pháp nói trên đều đưa vào các giống chủng mới hàng trăm, thậm chí hàng nghìn gen mới (nguyên vẹn hoặc đã bị huỷ hoại do đột biến không định hướng) không hề qua kiểm tra (và cũng không thể kiểm tra được) có trước và sau khi sử dụng. Các giống cây trồng và vật nuôi đó cũng được coi là “tự nhiên”, mặc dù chúng chỉ có thể được nuôi trồng trong những không gian có sự chăm sóc thường xuyên của con người, không thể nuôi trồng ngoài thiên nhiên hoang dã.
Ngày nay, với công nghệ thao tác gen, người ta chỉ cần 20 năm để tăng gấp đôi sản lượng lương thực với chất lượng cao hơn rất nhiều. Bảng thống kê dưới đây là một số thành tựu đạt được tới năm 1999:

Điều quan trọng ở đây là các sinh vật chuyển gen chỉ mang từ 1 đến một vài gen đưa từ ngoài vào, và các gen này đều được biết rất rõ cả về cấu trúc và chức năng của chúng trong tế bào.
Tự nhiên hay nhân tạo
Người ta thường yêu cầu được biết trong thực phẩm họ ăn chứa các thành phần “tự nhiên” hay “nhân tạo”. Xin thưa, loại nấm mốc sinh ra các chất gây ung thư mọc rất tự nhiên trên các hạt lạc; virut Ebola gây chết người và nhiều vi khuẩn gây bệnh nhiễm trùng nặng là các sản phẩm điển hình của tự nhiên. Trong khi đó, cho đến nay và còn nhiều năm sau này gần như toàn bộ các công cụ và vật liệu dùng trong công nghệ thao tác gen là bắt nguồn từ tự nhiên. Tất cả các gen đưa vào một sinh vật nào đó được lấy ra từ một sinh vật khác, con người hiện nay chưa tự tạo ra các gen này. Thí dụ, gen diệt côn trùng Bt được lấy ra từ vi khuẩn diệt sâu rồi đưa vào cây bông để tạo ra cây bông không cần thuốc trừ sâu. Để lấy được gen Bt ra khỏi vi khuẩn người ta phải dùng một vài enzym để cắt, tổng hợp AND như enzym cắt giới hạn, enzym AND polymerase. Các enzym này cũng được lấy ra từ sinh vật sống là vi khuẩn. Để đưa gen Bt vào cây người ta cũng sử dụng các hiện tượng vốn diễn ra trong tự nhiên như biến nạp, tái nạp, hoặc thông qua một vi khuẩn khác như Agrobacterium. Có thể nói, toàn bộ khoa học và công nghệ thao tác gen hiện nay, tức phần lõi cốt của công nghệ sinh học hiện đại, là kết quả của quá trình nghiên cứu phân tích, tìm hiểu thiên nhiên, rồi gạn lọc, nhân lên và sử dụng các kết quả nghiên cứu đó để trở lại tạo ra các sinh vật chuyển gen hoặc ứng dụng các hiện tượng, cơ chế tự nhiên vào cuộc sống con người. Giả sử, nếu sau này khoa học tiến lên, con người có thể tự tổng hợp được gen hoàn toàn bằng con đường hoá học, thì thành phần và phương thức hoạt động của các gen đó vẫn phải dựa vào các nguyên lý và cơ chế của tự nhiên.
Bố ơi, trong đĩa ăn của con có gen không?
Câu hỏi này là của một cháu 14 tuổi, con gái tiến sĩ Maarten Chrispeels, giám đốc Trung tâm Nông nghiệp phân tử San Diego, tác giả bài viết “Thực phẩm từ cây trồng biến đổi di truyền”. Theo một thống kê, đó cũng là băn khoăn của 70% số người được hỏi cho rằng thức ăn bình thường không chứa gen! Thật ra, trong mỗi đĩa ăn thường có vài miếng thịt, một ít rau, cơm hoặc ngô, và tất nhiên thường có cả vi khuẩn, có lợi và có hại. Như vậy, trong mỗi đĩa chí ít cũng phải có hàng tỷ tế bào. Mỗi tế bào vi khuẩn có khoảng 2 nghìn gen, trong mỗi tế bào ngũ cốc trung bình chứa 25 nghìn gen. Tính trung bình trong mỗi đĩa ăn không có thực phẩm chuyển gen chứa hàng tỷ bản sao của 250 nghìn gen. Nếu chúng là thực phẩm chuyển gen thì cũng chỉ có thêm 10-15 gen và tất cả đều được tiêu hoá bình thường trong dịch tiêu hoá của chúng ta.
Hãy quẳng gánh lo đi mà vui sống
Đó là tên của cuốn sách cùng tác giả với cuốn “Đắc nhân tâm” nổi tiếng. Trong trường hợp các sinh vật chuyển gen, câu đó là một lời khuyên đúng lúc. Gánh lo về sự không an toàn của sinh vật chuyển gen là không có cơ sở khoa học. Kết cục cũng sẽ diễn ra như tình hình những năm đầu của thập kỷ 70, khi công nghệ thao tác gen mới phôi thai, khi một làn sóng phản đối và lo lắng về công nghệ này đã nhanh chóng lan truyền trên báo chí ở Mỹ và Châu Âu, khi mà nhiều hội nghị chuyên đề đã được triệu tập mà lịch sử còn để lại dấu ấn như Hội nghị Asilomar ở California tháng 2 năm 1975, và cuối cùng năm 1981, khi đã tích luỹ đủ số liệu và kinh nghiệm khoa học, người ta đã đi đến kết luận là công nghệ này không nguy hiểm như mọi người đã tưởng.
Tuy nhiên, nỗi lo đó hiện nay là dễ hiểu bới nhiều nguyên nhân: người tiêu dùng chưa quen với loại sản phẩm mới, thiếu những thông tin đáng tin cậy và cập nhật, lại luôn phải đối mặt với luồng thông tin âm tính thường xuyên đưa trên các phương tiện thông tin đại chúng, và do thiếu những hiểu biết chung về hệ thống sản xuất thực phẩm hiện đại. Cộng đồng các nhà khoa học thì chưa cung cấp kịp thời các thông tin cần thiết về các thực phẩm chuyển gen cũng như về giá trị đầy đủ của công nghệ này. Rõ ràng là sự chấp nhận của xã hội đóng vai trò trung tâm trong việc tiếp tục phát triển và ứng dụng công nghệ sinh học trong sản xuất thực phẩm và trong nông nghiệp.
Như vậy, nỗi lo không có cơ sở cần phải được “quẳng đi” để “vui sống” trong hy vọng lớn lao và hiện thực, dồn hết tâm trí chuẩn bị tiềm năng nhân lực và vật lực để tiếp nhận và ứng dụng thành công những thành tựu khoa học công nghệ của nhân loại thế kỷ 21, phục vụ hiệu quả sự nghiệp công nghiệp hoá và hiện đại hoá đất nước.
Việt Nam – lợi thế và thách thức
Công nghệ sinh học hiện đại là cơ hội cho các nước nghèo, đặc biệt là các nước nghèo có tiềm năng thiên nhiên lớn và có đội ngũ cán bộ khoa học có trình độ và đông đảo như nước ta. Là cơ hội vì nó tạo điều kiện cho ta đi tắt, vượt qua một số giai đoạn phát triển mà các nước đi trước phải trải qua trong nhiều năm, tiết kiệm cho ta nhiều tiền của và năm tháng mày mò. Một thí dụ là bản đồ hệ gen người và bản đồ hệ gen của nhiều cây trồng và vật nuôi chủ yếu của nông nghiệp đã được giải và được sử dụng rộng rãi và miễn phí.
Trên thực tế, hàng loạt những ứng dụng của khoa học hiện đại này đã và đang được thực hiện trong nhiều phòng thí nghiệm ở nước ta. Hiện nay ta đã có thể thực hiện được các việc sau:
1. Điều tra và khai thác tài nguyên sinh học bằng công nghệ phân tử AND, hiệu quả, chính xác và nhanh chóng;
2. Tạo ra và sử dụng hợp lý cây trồng và vật nuôi chuyển gen;
3. Nhân bản vô tính động vật;
4. Xác định huyết thống và điều tra hình sự bằng kỹ thuật di truyền phân tử ;
5. Khảo sát và chẩn đoán chính xác các gen bệnh ở người Việt Nam, định ra các phương thức hợp lý và tiết kiệm nhất để loại trừ các gen bệnh ra khỏi cộng đồng;
6. Áp dụng các kỹ thuật phân tử để chẩn đoán và đề xuất phương án điều trị các bệnh nhiễm trùng ở người và động, thực vật;
7. Sử dụng các kỹ thuật phân tử AND trong chọn tạo giống cây trồng và vật nuôi, rút ngắn nhiều lần thời gian chọn giống và tăng thêm nhiều lần hiệu quả thành công;
Tuy nhiên, chúng ta đang gặp những thách thức và bất cập ở tầm vĩ mô:
1. Về hệ thống và qui mô các cơ quan khoa học, chúng ta vẫn theo mô hình cũ của các nước XHCN trước đây, vốn đã tỏ ra hiệu quả thấp và không tiết kiệm, thể hiện ở mạng lưới các viện thuộc hệ thống viện hàn lâm, ít liên quan với đào tạo đại học và sau đại học, nơi sinh ra các thế hệ con người làm khoa học. Và như vậy, các trường đại học, vốn là lực lượng khoa học chủ yếu của các nước khoa học tiên tiến, lại nằm ngoài hệ thống các cơ quan khoa học của đất nước.
2. Về qui mô phòng thí nghiệm, kinh nghiệm của lĩnh vực sinh học phân tử và thao tác gen cho thấy nhóm nghiên cứu gồm 5-7 người với Phòng thí nghiệm qui mô 500 ngàn USD thiết bị ban đầu là hiệu quả hơn cả. Như vậy số lượng các đơn vị làm khoa học sẽ tăng lên. Không có nước nào khoa học có thể tiến lên nhanh chóng mà chỉ củng cố một – hai cơ quan khoa học.
3. Về kinh phí khoa học, những năm qua Nhà nước đã đầu tư không ít, nhưng hệ thống phân bổ còn những bức xúc, có yếu tố tiêu cực, dẫn đến lãng phí, có thể giảm hiệu quả đầu tư.
